Fleshing things out...

I've been spending some time refining elements and fleshing things out a bit.

Changes include:

  • Small decorative objects. All over the show.
  • Rework of grass and path textures and culling systems for them.
  • Update on occlusion shader: the bottoms of objects aren't culled anymore, so there's still an indication of objects and buildings if the player moves behind them.
  • Another go at creating villagers that fit inside this world.  I think ultimately I wanna land somewhere between this iteration and the heavy stylisation of the previous one.
  • Changed the camera angle a bit. On one hand I want the camera to be close to eye-level so you experience the set in much the same way your avatar does. On the other hand that means more to render, and  a higher  angle opens up some other opportunities for me on the xz plane..
  • Refined a bunch of the textures. While I was painting some of the bushes I used a jitter on my brush, and really liked the way you can quickly create concentric shapes that way. Have since applied it to grass, paving and white bricks, wanna use it more frequently as a strong style element. I've been a bit indecisive with "how much linework, if any, is enough?"
  • Some new materials for buildings.
  • I'd wasted a quarter of the texture space for trees, so I used the leftover space for more leaves and depth via another layer.

Things I'm looking at next:

  • Smaller structures and structural elements: think pillars, smaller stalls in front of buildings, pavillions, that sorta thing.
  • Fountains. I've got an idea for how I'd like to treat water I'd REALLY like to try out.
  • Character animation. Will need some tutorials since I haven't really used the Unity animation system. I think using and intentionally low frame rate might simplify things for me and give the set a bit of a stop-motion feel.
  • Some UI elements. Will be another round of tutorials for me, and help make this *look* like a game. Also I worked as a graphic designer for a very long time so I feel like I should be able to pull something half-decent off.
